What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is based on the philosophy that good health depends upon a normally functioning nervous system. The central nerve system includes the brain and spine, while the peripheral or outer nerve system includes the nerves extending outside the spine to all parts of the body.  The word Chiropractic comes from the Greek word chiropraktikos. It's meaning is treatment by the hands. According to the Chiropractic philosophy, the cause of dis-ease and disease processes start with the body's inability to adapt to stress. Chiropractic addresses dis-ease without the use of chemicals, drugs, and/or surgery. Chiropractic doctors find and adjust musculoskeletal areas of the body which are functioning improperly, which chirorpactic terms the "subluxation."

What conditions can be helped by chiropractic?

Though most people seek chiropractic care for relieving low back pain, research has found it to be effective for migraines, neck and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel, and fibromyalgia.

Does Chiropractic hurt?
Normally, chiropractic adjustments are completely painless. Most patients experience temporary or little discomfort while being adjusted.

Is Chiropractic safe?
Chiropractic adjustments are very safe.

What kind of education and training do chiropractic doctors have?
Chiropractors go through a rigorous four year medical  school equivalent education that emphasizes neuromuscular diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractic education is focused on biological and health sciences (anatomy, physiology, histology, biochemistry, clinical and radiological diagnosis); specialized training in the chiropractic discipline (theoretical studies, practice, diagnosis and applications); and extensive clinical training.

Is there any research for what chiropractic is effective?
There are more than several research studies that have documented the effectiveness of chiropractic in relieving neck and back pain. More recent research studies have shown chiropractic care effective in lessening infantile colic and migraines.

What can I expect on my first visit?
The first thing the chiropractic doctor will do is take a general health survey and ask you to describe any of your health complaints. The chiropractor will also inquire about your family health history, dietary habits, other medical and chiropractic care you may have had, your job, and to help determine the nature of your illness and the best way to go about treating the problem.

A physical examination will be performed in accordance with your chiropractor's clinical judgement, which may include x-rays, laboratory analysis and other diagnostic procedures. In addition, a spinal examination and analysis will be performed to detect any structural abnormalities which may be causing or exacerbating your condition. All of these are vital parts of your health profile, and important to the chiropractor in evaluating your problem.
